1,000 Islands 2016

Debra Wallace

We spend a lot of the summer on Cayuga Lake, but had never been vacationing many other places in New York.  My husband resisted the idea of leaving town again, but I won him over when some very close friends of ours invited us to their family’s vacation home in the 1,000 Islands.

Because I’m oblivious I didn’t really know what the 1,000 Islands actually were besides maybe a bunch of islands.  I learned that it’s an area at the northeast point of Lake Ontario where the St. Lawrence River has carved (an ironic) nearly two thousand islands out of the rock.  There is so much rock that you can easily sink your boat but cannot easily build foundations for your home.  Most lakes are roughly the shapes of ovals surrounded by houses stacked on top of one another.  The 1,000 Islands has an opposite feel – there’s land, water and houses everywhere and a ride on the river leaves you lusting after houses with 3 boat garages.

Can life be better than a five year old on a boat headed to go get ice cream?

Or a four year old on a boat headed to go get ice cream?

Caleb the meerkat.

Jim, the owner of said house and said boat, offered my 10 year old the wheel. Brave man.

While it would have been completely fine if it hadn’t worked out, I was over the moon that I had a chance to go tubing. This is a rare event for me, both because we don’t own a boat and because I’m usually pregnant.

Caleb, on the left, is less of an adrenaline junky but we managed to convince him anyway. He was thrilled until he started riding outside the wake and then the novelty wore off.

This was Allison and Josie’s first time tubing. #cutestthingever

On our way to Alex Bay, Daniel learned that you’re supposed to wave to passing boats.

A unique thing about the 1,000 Islands are that you can boat to multiple locations with public docks. In Alex Bay they had a busking festival – here the kids are waiting for pizza and a spy show.

A HUGE thank you to Jim and Bev for opening your home to us. We are so grateful! And of course, to Laura and Jon for the invite. 🙂

Sharing is caring!
