Black Creek Park Family Photography ~ Diane & Adam

Diane and Adam were hardcore photography enthusiasts and braved a relatively cold nearly-winter day for some fall-themed family photos at Black Creek Park. Black Creek Park is a great location for those of us living on the west side. It has water, paths and a small bridge that make for a great location.

Themes, even if they’re low key, are a great way to mix up your photo session a little. Whether or not you choose a theme is completely up to you and is all about what makes you happy in life.

Within reason of course. A hot tub themed session might be weird. Or massage themed. But you could definitely go with any kind of food, or most activities. For more ideas for themed sessions, click here.

In this case, blankets and hot cider were where it was at. Diane brought an actual thermos of warm cider for the session, which had the added effect of keeping her kids super happy.

Diane was a really good sport while I geeked out a little bit about Adam’s civil engineering job in water sanitation. #environmentalgeek Right here.

Diane also has a super interesting job she loves working in the schools.

Outdoor Child Photography Chili, NY

Two women were waving at me through tinted glass so I waved back and pulled around. A woman I thought was Nicole walked over but then I realized she was definitely not Nicole. She was saying, “It’s so nice to finally meet you!” and I was thinking, “You have me confused with someone else!” Then she enthusiastically added, “I’m Nicole’s sister!” The family resemblance was amazing!

I had the privilege of working with Ansley and Lucas last year. Nicole surprised her sister with some portraits – which is a brilliant gift idea! I assumed she was doing the same thing, but this time mom came along.

Megan’s beautiful children were divided about having their photos taken. Ansley, the model, was all about it.

She acted almost like she’d waited her whole life for this moment in the spotlight.

Lucas, on the other hand, was none too happy to be missing cousin time on the playground nearby.

So a little jumping was in order. And also a little bantering.

And finally some long awaited playground time!

As you’re thinking about locations for child photography, playgrounds and parks are a great option because they are places kids love to be. This usually means that the children will relax and be themselves, which produces more authentic portraits. Parks with water and features like small bridges add a lot of variety to the background. Black Creek Park is one of my favorite places on the Westside.

Rainy Day Family Portraits ~ Chili, NY

Cancellation Policy: If you’re good with rain, snow, sleet, sunshine or high pollen counts, so am I. Of course, it’s always a little surprising when people don’t cancel for these things but Fallanne is hard core, Colby’s a hunter and there are a few police officers thrown in the mix and whatnot, so rescheduling everyone to be at the same time and place again was probably much more daunting than getting wet.

I think there are a couple portfolio pieces in here. Rainy days are not so bad!

Bonus: I don’t charge per person so an extended family session is a great time to get some shots of you and your spouse. Sometimes that only happens at weddings, and sometimes just yours. It’s nice to have a little Facebook profile fodder!

This is an excellent example of adding style to your images. Fallanne’s family has this awesome, random country style to their lives. In their maternity session they wore cowboy boots, for example. So of course everyone in the family had some flannel to wear. Sometimes adding style can be really simple but still makes your images a reflection of who you are personally.

Their family chose the 3 color approach to clothing. It’s simple, and looks amazing. If they were all mismatched this image would not have nearly the same impact.

The next time you have family portraits scheduled and it’s raining, feel free to bring along an umbrella and some flannel!

Senior Portraits at Black Creek Park, Chili, NY ~ Dominic

The second step toward a perfect session is clothing and it’s worth putting a lot of thought into. You want the clothing you wear for your senior portraits to be something that represents you and is comfortable, but doesn’t draw attention away from your face.

Dominic attends a school with a dress code, so wearing formal clothing was a great choice for him. For his Senior Portraits at Black Creek Park, Chili, NY his clothing choice balances with nature to give the images a relaxed feeling. In these portraits, you can see his personality come through both through his choice of location and clothing.

Generally people match this style of clothing with formal studio backdrops, but you can see that a park is also an excellent choice.
