I just turned 30 this year and my favorite thing about being 30 is that you’re at a place in your life where you’re still relatively young, but not plagued by self-confidence issues quite as much as you were in your 20s. Or at least that’s how it’s been for me.

I was published in the Ithaca Journal numerous times in high school which I would call professional, but in terms of my adult professional portrait photography career, that began a few years ago. At the time I felt self-conscious about using my name because it seemed arrogant. So I decided to use the name Sweet Song Photography from Third Day Song “You are So Good to Me.” My daughter’s name is Melody so it seemed appropriate.

Fast forward a few years and I realized that having two names is kind of confusing for people. I love photography because of the relationships – getting to know families well enough that I know all six kids’ names, their dog’s name and what they love to do in their free time. The problem was that people would remember Sweet Song but not my name, or visa versa so it became kind of difficult to connect.

I also woke up one day and realized that all the leaders in the industry use their full names. Not that I’m destined to be the next Jerry Ghionis, but I’m not sure this is the place to really deviate.

So I changed my Facebook page, started a new blog, bought a new domain name and switched everything over. The weird thing is that people still search for Sweet Song Photography and somehow find me. But there are also people who say they searched Sweet Song Photography and couldn’t find anything – and this post is for all of you. I’m still here!
